ISO 12625-9 is the international standard titled “Tissue paper and tissue products — Part 9: Determination of ball burst strength.” It specifies the method for measuring the resistance of a tissue sample to penetration by a polished steel ball, providing a reliable measure of puncture resistance.
In this testing procedure, a test piece of tissue is clamped between two concentric rings. A burst ball then moves at a constant speed of (125 ± 5) mm/min to pierce the tissue until rupture occurs. The maximum force applied before rupture is recorded as the bursting force in newtons.
This process evaluates how well a tissue sample resists localized pressure, which simulates real-life situations such as wiping, pulling, or tearing. ISO 12625-9 ensures that measurements are repeatable, standardized, and reflective of real-world performance.
To ensure test accuracy, follow the sampling, conditioning, and preparation procedures outlined in the ISO standard:
Power on the test instrument at least 30 minutes before testing to allow system stabilization.
Clamp the sample with its top surface facing the burst ball. Consistency is key—if the top side is unclear, ensure all samples are clamped identically.
Set the machine speed to 125 mm/min.
Start the test. The ball presses perpendicularly into the tissue until rupture occurs.
Record the peak force measured before the rupture.
Repeat the test for at least 10 specimens to ensure data reliability.
